What is a Home Modification & How Can an Occupational Therapist Help?

Home should be a place where you feel safe, comfortable, and confident to live your daily life. But for many people—especially those with disabilities, injuries, or age-related challenges—getting around the house can be tricky. That’s where home modifications come in. Occupational Therapists (OTs) are here to help you make your home safer and easier to live in, so you can stay independent for longer.

What is a Home Modification?

A home modification is any change made to your house to help you move around more safely and easily. These changes can be small or large, depending on your needs. The goal is to remove barriers and reduce the risk of injury, especially falls.

Some common home modifications include:

    • Installing grab rails in the bathroom

    • Adding a step-free shower or bath seat

    • Building ramps instead of stairs at entryways

    • Widening doorways to fit mobility aids like wheelchairs

    • Adding non-slip flooring

    • Lowering kitchen benches or cupboards

    • Installing handrails on stairs

    • Moving light switches and power points to easier-to-reach places

These changes might seem small, but they can make a big difference to your everyday comfort and safety.

Why Is An Accessible Home Important?

For many Australians living with a disability, chronic condition, or injury, everyday tasks like using the toilet, having a shower, or getting into bed can become difficult. This can knock your confidence and make you feel less in control of your life.

Home modifications can:

    • Improve safety and reduce the risk of falls or injuries

    • Help you stay in your home longer

    • Increase your ability to do daily activities on your own

    • Boost your confidence and independence

    • Make it easier for carers or family to support you

At Cas Health, we believe your home should work for you—not against you. That’s why we offer person-centered solutions that are tailored to your lifestyle and needs.

How Can Occupational Therapists Help?

Occupational Therapists play a key role in assessing your needs and recommending the right home modifications. At Cas Health, our OTs are trained to look at both the environment and your individual goals. They’ll make sure the changes not only support your safety but also help you stay involved in daily life.

Here’s how the process usually works:

    1. Initial Assessment: An OT will visit your home and have a friendly chat with you about what you’re finding difficult. They’ll take note of how you move around the space, what supports you already have, and where the hazards are.
    2. Planning and Recommendations: Based on the assessment, the OT will recommend home modifications that suit your needs. They’ll also explain how each change could help. This could include simple aids or more complex structural changes.
    3. Working With Builders: Our OTs often work closely with trusted builders or home modification specialists to make sure the work is done correctly and to safety standards. We’ll also make sure everything complies with NDIS guidelines if funding is involved.
    4. Ongoing Support: After the changes are made, the OT will check back in with you to see how things are going and whether any further support is needed.

Before and After: Safer Access with a Stair Lift

Enjoying the backyard is something many of us take for granted. But for one of our lovely clients, simply stepping outside had become a daily challenge. The back stairs were steep and hard to manage due to mobility issues, making it risky and tiring to go out.

That’s where Cas Health stepped in. After a home assessment, our OT recommended installing a stair lift at the rear entrance. With support from Acorn Stair lifts, we made it happen.

Before: The client struggled with outdoor stairs that were steep and had no support for her condition. It limited her freedom and made her feel unsafe.

After: With the stairlift installed, she can now access her garden safely and easily, all on her own. No more overexertion or risk of falling—just smooth, secure access to the outdoors.

What Are The Benefits Of A Stairlift?

✔ Improved safety – less chance of falls or fatigue
✔ More independence – no need to wait for help
✔ Better quality of life – more fresh air and freedom
✔ Long-term solution – future-proofing her mobility at home

This is just one example of how the right home modification can bring back confidence and freedom.

What Types of Home Modifications Can Be Funded by the NDIS?

If you’re an NDIS participant, you may be eligible for funding for home modifications. The NDIS usually covers modifications that are:

    • Reasonable and necessary for your safety and independence

    • Directly related to your disability

    • Not considered general household maintenance or renovations

Some examples of funded home modifications include:

    • Minor home changes like grab rails, shower hoses, or handheld shower heads

    • Major structural changes such as step-free showers, widened doorways, and ramps

Our Cas Health team is here to help guide you through the NDIS home modification process, from assessment and reports to liaising with builders and plan managers.

Benefits of Home Modifications

Still wondering if home modifications are worth it? Here are a few reasons why many of our clients say yes:

    • Peace of Mind: You and your loved ones can feel more confident knowing your home is safer.
    • More Freedom: You can move around your home with less help and do more things on your own.
    • Comfort and Confidence: Having a home that suits your needs helps you feel more in control.
    • Stay at Home Longer: You’re more likely to remain in your own home and avoid early moves to care facilities.
    • Support for Carers: Modifications can make it easier and safer for carers or support workers to assist you.

How to Get Started

If you think home modifications could help you or someone you care for, the best place to start is with an OT assessment. At Cas Health, our friendly team of OTs will listen to your needs, work with you to create a plan, and support you every step of the way.
