SUPPORT AFTER A TRANSPORT ACCIDENT

How occupational therapy can help after a transport accident

A transport accident can change your daily life in ways you may not have expected. Showering, preparing meals or moving around your home may take more effort or require support. Occupational therapy can help you manage these activities more safely and confidently.

At Cas Health, we listen to your concerns and assess your needs at home. Your goals guide our recommendations for practical strategies, equipment or home modifications.

TAC occupational therapy services

We assess how your accident injuries affect personal care, transfers, meal preparation and household tasks. Recommendations may include task adaptations, practice and the level of assistance you need.

We assess, trial and recommend equipment that suits your goals, abilities and home. This may include shower and toilet aids, seating, beds and mobility equipment, with setup and training where appropriate.

Equipment recommendations and purchase arrangements are subject to TAC requirements.

We identify barriers to moving around and using your home, including bathroom access, entrances and transfers. Your OT may recommend changes such as rails, ramps or bathroom modifications and liaise with relevant suppliers or trades.

TAC approval and property requirements need to be addressed before work proceeds.

We explore how pain, fatigue or changes in concentration affect daily activities. Strategies may include pacing, task simplification, rest planning and practical routines, coordinated with your treating team.

We help you plan and practise everyday activities outside the home, such as shopping or attending appointments. Assessment considers access barriers, equipment and the support you may need to take part.

Where relevant, we provide practical guidance to the people supporting you. This may include equipment use, task setup and safer ways to assist with daily activities and transfers.

We prepare findings and recommendations relevant to the agreed referral. With your consent, we communicate with your TAC contact and treating professionals about goals, progress and next steps.

Contact us to confirm suitability for a specific TAC assessment or report.

TAC funding and frequently asked questions

These answers are general guidance. We clarify the arrangements for your referral before services begin.

Can TAC fund occupational therapy?

The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) may pay for OT addressing injuries from your transport accident. Eligibility, service requirements and any required approval must be checked for your circumstances.

Do I need a GP referral or TAC approval?

You can contact Cas Health to enquire without a GP referral. For treatment during the first 90 days, TAC’s guidance requires a claim number, a doctor or other health professional’s recommendation, and treatment linked to the accident injury. Different services may have additional requirements.

What if my accident was more than 90 days ago?

Contact TAC if the accident was nearly or over 90 days ago and further treatment has not been approved, or if TAC has not funded any treatment or service for you in more than six months.

Can an occupational therapist visit me at home?

Yes. Cas Health offers mobile visits in the northern and western Melbourne suburbs listed above, subject to clinician suitability, availability and funding arrangements. Tell us your suburb and the support you are seeking when you enquire.

What happens during a TAC OT assessment?

Your OT asks about your goals and daily routine, then assesses the activities and environments relevant to your referral. With your agreement, this may include observing daily tasks, reviewing equipment and discussing support needs. We explain the recommendations and next steps.

Can my OT recommend equipment or home modifications?

Where appropriate, your OT can assess the need, consider options and document recommendations. TAC makes the funding decision. Check the applicable approval and supply arrangements before ordering equipment or starting modification work.

Will I have out-of-pocket costs?

TAC pays at its approved rates. A gap may apply if a provider’s charges are higher. Ask Cas Health to confirm fees, travel, reporting and billing arrangements before services start.

How soon can I get an appointment?

Availability depends on your location, assessment needs and a suitable clinician’s capacity. Contact our intake team for a current estimate. A referral enquiry is reviewed before an appointment is confirmed.
